A few people have written about this subject, so I think it’s time for me to put in my two penny’s worth. How can you make sure you love your wedding photos and always look good? Hire the right photographer, right? Partly. Your photographer clearly has to know what they are doing, but they are taking pictures of you and what you are doing, so you have to play your part.  Here is what I have learned over the years…

Clients often mention to me worries about having their photos taken, ‘I don’t want to look fat.’ ‘Look at my crow’s feet.’ ‘My face is all crinkled’… You get the picture.  I know it can be hard to look at pictures of yourself and enjoy them for what they are – moments captured that tell a story. Your story.  Your amazing and gorgeous wedding day story.  But it’s so important that you do, otherwise you are cutting yourself off from the joy of your wedding photography. It can seem like a mountain to climb, but you really can do it, I promise you.

I like to tell an honest story with my images.  I like to tell a happy, emotional, fun, romantic and honest story.  This means that there will be images of you when you aren’t posing for the camera, but being yourself.  The key to loving these images, is being happy with who you are to begin with.  The fact that it’s your wedding day always helps.  I always tell my clients, when they inevitably say how nervous they are about being photographed for hours on end (don’t worry, I’m not such a fan of it myself…) that it’s much easier on your wedding day.  You’re wearing amazing clothes; you’ve spent more time than ever getting ready and perfecting your ‘look’; you are so unbelievably happy; you are surrounded by family and friends, you may have had a little champagne to calm the nerves.  All of these factors help you look radiant and joyful and I can definitely capture that.  But I also want to catch the imperfect shots that keep you ‘real’ and show your humanity.  A funny face pulled, a tear shed, head thrown back and laughing like a drain, drinking champagne and singing your heart out on the dance floor.  These images put all the personality and fun into your day.  What would you have without them?  Not much that’s real, that’s for sure.  My job as a wedding photographer is to reflect your day back to you as it happened, with all of the fun, joy, laughter and imperfections as they happen.  To show you as your best but real selves.  And, in my experience, that means 2 things for you-

1. To look your best, you have to be open to the amazing day in front of you and enjoy it.  Eat it up and let it become part of you. Live it and breathe it. Getting married really is one of the happiest things you can do.

2. To love your photos, you first have to love yourself (or at least be happy with yourself).  Don’t worry about what you might perceive as a few physical imperfections.  I can assure you that nobody cares.  They are looking at the story of the whole picture.  They are remembering that moment when everyone was so happy. They care that you are happy and marrying the person you love and having the most wonderful day, beyond anything you imagined was possible. This is what you need to focus on (no pun intended… ok, maybe a little bit).

Brighton and Sussex Engagement Shoot Simmy and Ken BW 014a

Simmy and Ken’s Brighton engagement session really was a bit of an adventure and I, for one, loved every minute of it.  We started in the forest near where Ken grew up, with the most amazing carpet of bluebells that stretched as far as you could see.  We found a little patch of dappled sunshine peeking through the canopy and, well, you can see for yourself…  We wandered through the peaceful glade and, thanks to Ken’s sister, who was on hand to show us around, we found a few other cute spots for some romantic shots.

Part two (and a change of outfit) of our adventure took us to a little pub just outside of Brighton, situated on a canal, where they rent canoes for a bit of afternoon fun.  It was an absolutely gorgeous day, perfect for messing about on the water.  The great thing about planning activities for your photo-shoot is that you don’t have to worry about posing for the camera.  You can just get on with the fun and let your photographer capture it all.  These guys had a great time canoeing and it set us up for part three, Brighton Beach.

There could only be one place left to go… Brighton Beach for the sunset. Simmy’s gorgeous dressed glowed in the sunshine and by this time we were all so relaxed, everything just flowed.  It was an absolutely amazing afternoon and I cannot wait for their wedding at Fetcham Park in July.

Gina and Sam Shepperton Studios Wedding Photography by Jude Middleton

I love working at Shepperton Studios. It is a beautiful location with the most interesting background you can imagine.  So many amazing movies have been made here and it is just brilliant driving past the massive sound studios as you wind your way around to Littleton House, the beautiful building where the weddings take place.  Complete with a light-flooded orangery, Littleton House itself is packed with movie memorabilia and wonderful features, including a fabulous staircase and the marble floor you see above.  It’s no wonder film buffs Gina and Sam wanted to get married there, and so they did last year on a typical English weather day of sun, clouds, wind and showers.

Gina and her bridesmaids all got ready at Gina’s mum’s, while Sam and is family and friends gathered at the Crown in nearby Chertsey.  The Crown is a gorgeous old coachhouse dating from the 18th century.  The ceremony was held at the studios as well, meaning once we were there, we could settle in and enjoy the day.  After the ceremony, we popped upstairs to see some of the film posters on display (after watching Johnny Depp, Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter depart work for the day) and a quick pose on the bed from Braveheart (family friendly, of course!).  Then dinner, speeches and dancing, with everyone having a wonderful time. I cannot wait to work there again.  Please enjoy the pictures. Jude x

Jude Middleton EE Millbridge Court Photography

This gorgeous shoot is part 2 of the amazing styled shoot put together by Louise Beukes at the stunning Millbridge Court in Surrey.  I wanted a look completely different from the day-time style, but still incorporating my new brand colours of blue and gold.  This is not always easy to get right, but Louise did an amazing job and these images are the result.

She used a rich, opulent palette of midnight blue, indigo and navy with details in bronze, gold and copper to complete the look.  Abundant floral displays in blush, ivory, peach and red provide romance along with Faith Caton-Barber’s bespoke dress, rich with layers and elegance.

The table and decor were set with deep navy blue sequinned linen, topped with blue, white and gold china and cutlery.  Metallic accents in the glassware add the ‘certain something’ along with beautifully handcrafted stationery.  The cake draws elements from every part of the setting, complimenting the deep blue and coppery gold palette. It is a work of art.

Please enjoy the images.

Jude Middleton Photography Millbridge Court

I do love working on styled shoots, like this one.  It’s so satisfying and enjoyable to work with a group of handpicked professionals whose work you admire and aspire to, not to mention making new contacts and friends.  When I decided that the time was right for me to work on a new shoot, my first step was to talk to Louise Beukes of B.Loved.  She is so experienced and creative and I knew she’d be able to bring my ideas to life.

I’ll leave the rest of the explanation to her…

Said Louise, ‘The shoot is based on a romantic, modern mix of ombre aqua shades and touches of blush creating a light and pretty look that worked beautifully in the contemporary rustic barn at Millbridge Court.

Blousy, romantic flowers by Floribunda Rose and ombre watercolour ribbons by Kate Cullen provide the texture and detail with glitzy statement jewels by Natasha Jane and Jon Dibben, and touches of gold in our statement cake from Olofson Design injecting some glamour.

The chic, short chiffon dress by Faith Caton-Barber is the perfect choice for a more relaxed, intimate wedding style and shows off a pair of elegant Freya Rose heels. Her soft, romantic side-swept hair and natural makeup look created by Tori Harris carries through the simplicity of the look. The groom looks dapper in a navy three-piece suit from Hugh Harris and a luxe velvet blush pink bow tie from Mrs Bowtie. The bridesmaids peacock blue twobirds dress adds a pop of colour.’

The dream team…

Jude Middleton Best of Wedding Photography Title 2

What can I say?  There were just too many gorgeous people I wanted to share with you so here is part 2 (of 3) of my best wedding photography.  On your wedding day I am there just for you.  I like to start with plenty of time before the ceremony so I can get a real feel for the day and how to reflect it back to you, accurately and artistically with creativity and fun.  I use a mixture of unobtrusive reportage (hiding behind trees, standing in the background), fine art (for beautiful portraits) and a little mixing and mingling to catch the fun.  It means you end up with a real feel for how everything unfolded every time you look back at your images.  You feel the emotions, you feel the goosebumps, maybe a tear or two – you see your images and you know it all looked as amazing as it felt.  I can’t tell you how much I enjoy each and every wedding I work at.  I can only hope it shows through the images. Enjoy!
